Forever Young

The Queen Elizabeth II

In the new art project “Forever Young,” Eva Lanska explores the nature of time. In the three series presented, the author addresses the problem of time through the prism of a person, plot and place. The author studies the interaction of physical and symbolic time, time and meaning, the connection of times, their inseparability and extraterritoriality.

The Forever Young series explores time through a human lens and is dedicated to the phenomenon of heroes who move from the space of physical time to the space of symbolic time. The limitations of time and space are abolished and a person, becoming a symbol, freezes in eternity and is multiplied in space in his new quality.

The “Ballerinas” series explores the problem of the plot through the confrontation and connection of two poles in mutual acceptance and love. The polarities of the world oppose each other on one level and unite on another, which is the energy and beauty of existence.

The Antique Market series explores the nature of place and time of things. Old things fall out of their original order and plunge into the chaos of the antique market. Some of them return to the ordered spaces of human homes, but as a curiosity, thus receiving a new meaning for their existence.

All three projects are connected by the cross-cutting theme of the interpenetration of artistic time. In all works we see the background, where the art of another century is manifested, which is invisibly present in all works of visual or plastic art that surrounds us.

The new project of multifaceted artist, Eva Lanska known as film director and a video artist, explores the photography as a medium which gives her a possibility to express the ideas she defends from a new perspective. As in all her works, Lanska underlines social issues and offers a critical view of long-lasting customs which contradict the true human values.

The idea of the project came during work on her new video installation, which inspired her to fix the movement charged with a complex symbolic meaning. Staging the relationship between two ballerinas, Lanska highlights the moral sacrifices that the artists constantly face in the cruel world of ruthless competition in the pursuit of success. The situation shown by the artist is all the more dramatic as rivalry in ballet reaches its peak, making the struggle for the main role a life goal. Thus, through a piercing gaze, the young woman seeks to defeat her rival, but at the same time she betrays her moral values, which inspired her once to devote herself to art.

Eva Lanska says:

”This betrayal for the sake of your career will not be forgotten and will live in your heart forever. This work aims at emphasizing the deep truth that a person who has not betrayed is stronger, as much more strength is needed to stay true to yourself.”

On the other hand, the old pointe shoes, used by the dancers throughout years of painful training for a few hours of performance on stage, are a symbol of will power and internal struggle to achieve harmony. At the same time, they embody the pain of the young ballet dancers compelled to sacrifice friendship and private life for their career.

The rehearsal room is replaced by the stable, where the barriers recall the barres used for training. But the walls behind the barres disappear, opening up the space and encouraging to break down the mental and social walls that are imposed on dancers. By abolishing the limits of the space, the artist demonstrates the infinite possibilities for the human being to rule his life. The world is not a stable reality but a construction of the mind which can be changed by expanding the boundaries of our own consciousness. And the first step should be made by ourselves…

The existence of choice is a frequent theme of the Lanska’s works. In this project, she addresses the artists faced with a choice to follow a rough artistic path or strive for success by all means. The contrast between the girls' grace and their menacing gestures reveals how the harmony with nature is broken when the artist moves away from his values.

The theme of SISTERHOOD, as a part of feminist movement, was always at the core of Lanska’s works. Therefore, this project raises the issues of the solidarity and mutual support between the women in the professional environment. By showing the ballet dancers calling the competition to a halt and embracing one another, the artist aims to emphasize that the changes have to come from the women’s community to break the patriarchal pressure which ruine

The other protagonist of this series of photographs, the old man wearing the classic suit, bids farewell to the old world which is almost erased by the reality that makes people depend on new technologies. Horse riding is one of the rare moments when a person can return to the roots, be himself or herself and get closer to nature. The time spent with the horse connects him to the world in which he has lived most of his life. This noble man appears in one of the scenes as a ghostly figure making reference to the Phantom of the Opera. By carrying the pair of pointe shoes on a tray he symbolically reminds that only one lead part will ever be up for grabs in the ballet. The old man could be seen by the viewer but he remains invisible for the ballet dancers, as the fierce struggle against a rival in search of a delusive victory blinds them to reality.

In both cases, Eva Lanska focuses on the BEAUTY of the human being in HARMONY with himself. Like the man cherishing the horse, the ballet dancers embracing one another as friends choose to keep their values in a world which dictates its codes and absorbs infight for survival without rules.
